Wicker Man. One year on…

It’s easily my number 1 coaster. Now, I’ve only been on a handful of coasters but Wicker Man is my personal perfect ride. It’s not too intense but has enough intensity to thrill anyone over 1.2m and the theming, my golly the theming is incredibly good. I know people rather bigger and badder wooden coasters but to me it’s bang on the money and is the perfect mix of fun and immersion.

So did it live up to the hype? I honestly believe it did. The whole experience is completely different to anything else in the UK and you are immersed from the moment you walk through the entrance to the time you step off the ride. I think it will set the standard in the future and show other parks the true potential of a full experience rollercoaster. That’s why US parks don’t interest me very much. They are all about the size and elements of rollercoasters but they really lack on theming and immersion. The pre show and the queue alone is enough to make me want more.

My only problem with the ride is the structure effects. The first ride I ever had on Wicker Man only had the screens turned on and a small gust of mist. The last time took a ride was much better because all of the effects were turned on including the fire and the “mist” was actually full blown fog. It was fantastic. I know why people are bored of it already but if you ride any rollercoaster dozens of times, it’s going to get boring.

All in all I think it’s a perfect addition to the park and is my favourite Secret Weapon coaster. It may not be big but it packs a punch.

I can’t wait to go back to Alton Towers and get back on this gem of a coaster next season.
